Naphtha is a hydrocarbon intermediate that is generally produced during the refining of crude oil in the atmospheric distillation unit (ADU/CDU) of a refinery, which is also the primary source. Additionally, naphtha is also produced from the distillation of coal tar, bitumen, and oil sands. However, the quantities produced through these processes can be considered minuscule compared to the previous process. The most common names are derived from the source from which it is produced, composition, end use, and also manufacturing companies' terminology. Some of the common names include ligroin, VM&P naphtha (Varnish Makers and Painter's naphtha), petroleum naphtha, petroleum spirits, as well as naphtha ASTM. In Australia, it is recognized as Shellite, and as white gas or white spirit in North America.
